I’ve been hearing about the Sea of Cortez for a few years now. My first glimpse of it, in Loreto, Baja del Sur, Mexico, was just as fabulous as I’d heard. The water is warm, turquoise and full of attractive fish. At about 10,000 people, the town is walkable. I stayed at Posada de las Flores, right on the town square.
It’s a beautiful hotel and only steps away from La Route, a bike-themed coffee store that made soy cappuccinos and fruit smoothies.
Parque Nacional Bahia de Loreto
Parque Nacional BahÃa de Loreto, also known as Loreto Bay National Park, includes five uninhabited islands and 510,000 acres within the Gulf of California. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See what I wrote about it for Outdoors Wire.
A sober destination
I’m sure some people come to party late, but I prefer getting up early and seeing the sunrise over the Malecon. I found Loreto a very easy and accessible sober destination. Here’s how I wrote it up for The Sober Curator.
If you like water sports, relaxing Mexican towns, and/or mission history, this is a wonderful place to spend a few days. Or longer. Get more ideas from Loreto’s helpful tourism site.
