Thanks to a Living Social deal, I had a lovely month of classes at Studio Blue in Portland. This Pilates and yoga studio on NW 17th Avenue, just outside of the Pearl, offers more than 30 classes per week. Many use the reformer machines, others are mat classes. The teachers also seem to do lots of private lessons.
Studio Blue has a bunch of different class formats, including some that focus on specific props, like the Bosu/fitness ball class. I especially liked the Pilates sculpt, which used lots of small weights along with Pilates exercises. The foam roller stretching class is an entire hour of rolling out different body parts with foam rollers and small balls. Very good for knotty muscles. Classes were small during my month, so students got lots of attention from the knowledgeable teachers.
I planned to take more TRX classes, but didn’t get to that many. TRX is more intimidating than Pilates and, for me, sometimes leads to muscles being sore for days. Especially from those wretched planks with your feet suspended in the TRX straps. Yikes!
My favorite details about Studio Blue are that it smells great when you walk in (courtesy of one powerful scented candle on the desk) and that the props develop the blue theme.
