The East Portland Community Center threw a fabulous Zumba party last Saturday night. Instead of congregating in the usual studio, we had enough costumed Zumba dancers to warrant taking over the gym. The party featured spooky decorations, relatively healthful snacks, and all three of the community center’s Zumba teachers.
Long ago I taught yoga at a drug rehab center as a volunteer for Living Yoga. During training, the leaders encouraged team teaching as a way to model healthy partnerships for the recovering addicts. I think it’s uplifting for everybody, addict or not, to see our teachers have fun working together. I was impressed with their decorations and their dedication to organizing a party. They seamlessly traded off teaching the different songs. Plus, they looked super cute in their costumes!
Our teachers already announced that this is the first annual Halloween Zumba party, and we might get to have a Zumba party on the evening of New Year’s Eve, too. I hope so. The EPCC offers 11 Zumba classes per week, including Aqua Zumba in the pool and Zumba Gold for seniors or others who want a lower impact workout. It was fun to have both students and teachers from different classes all together on a Saturday evening.
We all got two glow sticks like ravers used to wear (or maybe still wear). They make interesting patterns when you turn your flash off.
