“Have I told you today how much I love my new portable coffee press?” I asked my partner daily as we road tripped through the Southwest.
“Uh huh,” he said patiently, though I’m sure he was sick of the question.
I just couldn’t get over the simple genius of the new Presse by bobble. It’s a press and cup in one that’s perfect for camping, car trips, or anywhere you want good coffee.
I live in Portland. Like many Portlanders, I’m a coffee snob who routinely travels with coffee. This used to work okay with hotel coffee makers, but now so many of them use those little pod dealies which are never strong enough for me. I’ve tried to add extra coffee to the pods, with very messy results. Sorry, hotel housekeeping staff.
With the Presse, all I need is access to hot water. At hotels, I used the tea dispenser in the continental breakfast rooms, or microwaved it. Camping, I used the portable stove.
You put the coffee in the bottom of the press (as strong as you want!), add hot water, wait three minutes, then use the microfilter insert to press your coffee. The insert separates the grounds from the rest of the cup, so you can go ahead and drink. Three-wall insulation keeps the coffee really hot for a long time. Unlike my other standard coffee making method – the pour over – no filter is necessary.
My only criticisms is it’s hard to get the label off (which is why mine is still on), and sometimes it’s hard to press the coffee. My partner teased me about getting a triceps workout while pressing.
According to the bobble website, “Our mission is to eliminate the outrageous waste of single serve, disposable beverages by creating reusable drinking solutions that you actually want to carry all day long.” Halleluiah! A noble goal. The company began with a reinvented water bottle in 2010, and expanded from there. Seventh Generation acquired bobble in 2013.
The Presse comes in silver, red and white, and retails for $29.99.
