7 Reasons to Go to 2013 IDEA World Fitness Convention

This was last year's sign, so 2013 marks the convention's 31st year.

I’m getting excited about the IDEA World Fitness Convention in Los Angeles next month. Last year I attended for the first time, and it was so fun! Fitness pros from at least 60 countries all get together to expand their knowledge, network, try new workouts and show off new fitness products. Here are a few of the features that I’m especially looking forward to.

Epic Dance Encounter. This event showcases seven different dance fitness programs, accompanied by the Reebok Fitness Fashion Show. I’m looking forward to both the dance exhibitions and the fashions. On a side note, this is the conference to see people showing off their best fitness threads! Last year  I wore ugly shoes and vowed to wear cuter ones this year.

Showcase Sanctuary. This is some kind of mind-body event where IDEA will create a spa room with dimmed lights, relaxing music and aromatherapy. After all the working out, people will be ready for a little rest and a smell besides sweat.

Emphasis on Older Adult Training. The wave of the future! As the population ages (including us fitness pros) we have to try new tactics to safely train folks. This year’s convention features the Ultimate Anti-Aging Workout, YogaFit for Seniors, TRX for seniors and a bunch of other senior-centered programs.

Fitness and Nutrition Expo. I have always loved walking through exhibition halls, wondering what marvelous thing I will find in the next booth. Many established fitness brands show off their stuff at IDEA. I especially enjoy meeting the people who are launching new brands. So many great ones exhibited last year, including The Vertical Edge, Bombay Jam, RooSport, Just Jump It (I love the jump rope I bought from them), FitDeck and lots more. Can’t wait to see who’s there this year!

Corporate Wellness Sessions. This is an area I’ve only worked in a little bit, but it’s a very smart idea. Companies promote wellness, their employees are happier, healthier and more productive, the company saves on insurance costs. Everybody wins! I’d like to learn more.

Special Party for International Members. Not sure they’ll let me in here, even with my press pass, since I’m only coming from Portland. But I love the idea of meeting all the fit pros from other countries. Last year I met a lovely lady from Bolivia who owns an exercise studio there. Would like to make more of these connections.

Hiking Hollywood Hills. IDEA doesn’t happen only inside the convention center. The organization also offers a few chances to bike, hike or take a guided bus tour of L.A. I think the hiking tour of the Hollywood Hills sounds like the most fun.
